  1. cottager︰佃農。文中據原文習慣作cottager。
  2. hen：母雞。文中據原文習慣作hen。
  3. lay：產卵。
  4. lump：塊、團。
  5. in order that：為……起見。
  6. in no respect：沒有一點；全然不。
  7. all at once：驟然、一下子。
  8. deprive：剝奪。
  9. assured：一定的、保險的。
  10. aesop：譯作伊索。人名，約西元前６１９∼前５６４，希臘作家。相傳為其所著的《伊索寓言》，寓人生哲學於小故事中，流傳其廣。後人續有增補。
Allusion description《伊索寓言》裡有一則小故事，敘述一個貪心的農夫和他的妻子，他們本來養了一隻母雞，每天都會下一顆金蛋，便以為這隻母雞的肚子裡藏有一大塊金子。為了得到金塊，農夫和他的妻子把母雞殺了，結果卻發現牠肚裡什麼都沒有。貪心的農夫和他的妻子不但沒得到那塊金子，卻連原本每天可得的金蛋都沒了。後來這個故事被濃縮成「殺雞取卵」，用來比喻為貪圖眼前的好處而斷絕了長遠的利益。
